How to stay alive

Chase meaning as though your very existence depends on it; without it you will fade away. Become a dragon and open your wings; lattice work against the sun. Burn on, especially after they tell no, you cannot breathe fire; give yourself over to something nearly as impossible.

Fail dramatically. Fail like you never imagined you could. No, fail like you never imagined anyone could.

Then wake up one day, play your favorite song at dawn, and decide to try again.

People will call you foolish. Suggest it might be time to settle. Whisper to you that you need the same things they have acquired. They are well-meaning but they confuse happiness with joy. You were never looking for the former. (But keep a tight grasp on joy, or you will wither like a neglected houseplant.)

They do not know many things about you. That unlike many, you do not want to trade meaning for contentment or comfort or familiarity.

They do not know that you cannot stand the thought of insides that are a fossilized relic of the past.

You’d rather have a heart on the verge of breaking every single day.
